The Impacts of D/Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Bioastronomy
نویسنده
چکیده
The impacts of comet D/Shoemaker-Levy 9 into Jupiter provided the first chance to actually observe the effects which may be important in causing mass extinctions. The widely predicted global deposition of dust, leading to the phenomena associated with 'nuclear winter', was readily observed, although Jupiter's internal heat source causes a different response deep in the atmosphere than occurs on Earth. Less widely anticipated, despite recognition that global wildfires occurred during the K-T event on Earth, was the fact that material ejected above the stratosphere fell back onto the stratosphere producing a major heat pulse over a scale of 104 km, by far the most easily and widely observed phenomenon during the impacts.

The Galileo Photopolarimeter Radiometer experiment made direct photometric observations at 678 and 945 nanometers of several comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 fragments impacting with Jupiter. Initial flashes occurred at (fragment G) 18 July 1994 07:33:32, (H) 18 July 19:31:58, (L) 19 July 22:16:48, and (Q1) 20 July 20:13:52 [equivalent universal time coordinated (UTC) observed at Earth], with relative pe...
متن کاملTemporal Behavior of Stratospheric Ammonia Abundanceand Temperature Following the SL9 Impacts
Infrared emission lines of stratospheric ammonia (NH3) were observed following the collisions of the fragments of Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 with Jupiter in July of 1994 at the impact sites of fragments G and K. Infrared heterodyne spectra near 10.7 μm were obtained by A. Betz et al. (in Abstracts for Special Sessions on Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, The 26th Meeting of the Division for Planetary Science...
متن کاملDetectability of Planetesimal Impacts on Giant Exoplanets
The detectability of planetesimal impacts on imaged exoplanets can be measured using Jupiter during the 1994 comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 events as a proxy. By integrating the whole planet flux with and without impact spots, the effect of the impacts at wavelengths from 2 4 μm is revealed. Jupiter’s reflected light spectrum in the near-infrared is dominated by its methane opacity including a deep ban...
متن کاملModels of the Sl9 Impacts Ii. Radiative-hydrodynamic Modeling of the Plume Splashback
We model the plume ‘splashback’ phase of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) collisions with Jupiter. We modified the ZEUS-3D hydrodynamic code to include radiative transport in the gray approximation, and present validation tests. After initializing with a model Jovian atmosphere, we couple mass and momentum fluxes of SL9 plume material, as calculated by the ballistic Monte-Carlo plume model of Paper I...
متن کاملThe formation of HCS and HCSH molecules and their role in the collision of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter.
The reaction of hydrogen sulfide with ground-state atomic carbon was examined with crossed molecular beams experiments and ab initio calculations. The thiohydroxycarbene molecule, HCSH, was the reactive intermediate, which fragmented into atomic hydrogen and the thioformyl radical HCS. This finding may account for the unassigned HCS source and an unidentified HCSH radical needed to match observ...
